Welcome to our web site

It is said, "Those who forget the lessons of the past are doomed to repeat them." This monument is intended to remind us of these lessons and point to a brighter future for us all. This beautiful interpretive site will serve to educate thousands of visitors and create a renewed sense of awareness for the history of the area.  The Chetco Indian Historical Memorial will be a resource of which the Brookings-Harbor community and the State of Oregon will be proud.

Kiosk Construction Complete

We are happy to say that the redwood kiosks were completed this fall. Thank you to Wow Arts & Exhibits for your beautiful work! This phase of the project would not have been possible without support from our sponsors, the Oregon Heritage Commission, the Oregon Community Foundation, the Siletz Tribe's Charitable Contribution Fund, and the Oregon Cultural Trust.

Plank House Entrance Construction

The Plank House entrance is complete! Wow Arts & Exhibits has done beautiful work. As of summer 2016 we have begun construction on the remaining three kiosks that will form the scale plank house. We are so excited for the next phase of the project! Be sure to check back for updates.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words and this picture portrays the plight of a once proud and peaceful people: the southern Oregon Chetco (Cheti) Indian. The tribe loved their native lands along the lower regions of the Chetco and Winchuck Rivers. This peaceful tribe of hunters and gatherers, fished, hunted sea lions, harvested shellfish, picked berries, and acorns.

Support For An Elegant Tribute

Editor:
I want to express thanks to all the people who have been involved with siting, design, and financial support of the Chetco Historical Indian Memorial (see Arwyn Rice’s Nov. 28 article).

I'm also grateful to the Curry Coastal Pilot for its coverage of the development of the project.

It's not easy to coordinate an endeavor like this one. It takes cooperation from state, city, county, and port officials and I want all of them to know their efforts are greatly appreciated.
